A Gender Scan, also known as a fetal sex determination scan, is an ultrasound procedure used to reveal the biological sex of the baby, typically during the second trimester of pregnancy.
What Is a Gender Scan?
The gender scan checks your baby’s anatomy using ultrasound imaging to identify male or female genitalia. It is a non-invasive and painless procedure, usually done between:
- 16 to 20 weeks of pregnancy (most accurate around 18–20 weeks)
What Does It Include?
- Ultrasound scan focused on the pelvic area of the fetus
- Confirmation of baby’s position
- Observation of genital development
- Optional: view of baby’s heartbeat, movement, and growth progress
When Can It Be Done?
- Can be done as early as 16 weeks, but best accuracy is at 18–20 weeks
- May be part of a routine anatomy scan
