Description
What is a Presentation + Growth Scan?
A Presentation + Growth Scan is a type of ultrasound performed during the later stages of pregnancy,
usually in the third trimester. This scan checks your baby’s position (presentation) inside the womb and evaluates
their growth to ensure healthy development. It provides essential information for both the mother and healthcare team
as delivery approaches.
What Does the Presentation + Growth Scan Assess?
- Baby’s Presentation: Identifies whether the baby is positioned head down (cephalic), breech (bottom first), or transverse (lying sideways).
- Fetal Growth: Measurements of the baby’s head, abdomen, and thigh bone are taken to estimate weight and size.
- Amniotic Fluid Levels: Ensures there is an appropriate amount of fluid around the baby.
- Placenta Location: Checks if the placenta is positioned normally and not covering the cervix (placenta previa).
- Blood Flow (Doppler if needed): Sometimes blood flow in the umbilical cord is measured to confirm the baby is receiving enough oxygen and nutrients.
When is the Scan Done?
- Usually between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.
- Can be done earlier or repeated if there are concerns about baby’s size, growth, or position.
Why is it Important?
- Confirms the baby’s position for delivery planning.
- Detects growth restrictions or unusually large size.
- Identifies potential complications like low amniotic fluid or placenta problems.
- Provides reassurance that your baby is developing well in the final stage of pregnancy.
What to Expect During the Scan?
- The procedure is similar to a standard ultrasound.
- A gel is applied to the abdomen, and an ultrasound probe is used to capture images.
- Non-invasive, safe, and painless for both mother and baby.
- Results are usually available immediately and explained by your doctor or sonographer.
